Well, it surprised both of us! On a rainy day at a mildly un-busy Art Walk in the little town of Issaquah WA,, my helper and I were standing behind a table full of my wood craft, when a figure came in the door and immediately I got a big moment of recognition.
As one matures into the 7th of the Stages of Man, recognition comes less and less frequently, so when you spot someone you have never seen in person before, in profile, at a somewhat remote show, you do hesitate to believe your eyes.
"Cynthia?" I ventured, and the person turned her head and looked at me in surprise. I leaned forward with hand held out, and introduced myself: "Susan Holland, Cynthia.. I know you from LinkedIn."
Cynthia Freese was just as surprised as I was, and the handshake turned into a delighted hug across the table. Cynthia and I had met over the internet some four years ago, when I was starting up my rescued and reworked wood art enterprise. She was all ready to venture down to Shelton, a small town an hour from Olympia on the Penninsula, to see my small exhibit at the Shelton Civic Center. I discouraged her from making such a long trip (two hours) to see such a small sampling. I was just starting up, and didn't really have much inventory at that time.
We kept in loose touch, and my good intentions to look her up when I moved into the greater Seattle area got lost in the shuffle of relocating and readjusting. But I had kept my eye on her, and especially since I learned she had partnered recently with a gallery I had visited and chatted with recently.
Long story short, she loved what I had on the table. Would I think about putting some of it in her gallery. NICE! Very nice surprise on a damp evening in Issaquah WA on their Chamber of Commerce First Friday Art Walk.
