The San Diego Adventure -- SURPRISINGLY SPARKLING AND FRESH!
Susan and her two grandsons visit family in California
The weather was perfect...the house simply charming with art and music everywhere, and the bearded ones were kind and loving and sweet to this grandmother from the north. It was so wonderful to be with these four men. I picked some of the many excursions they had planned and had to forego some in the name of health/sleep/energy good sense. The men went to the famous San Diego Zoo, and the waterfront where seals have a great place to play and be watched. Next time I''ll take my bathing suit! We visited with really fine neighbors in the mountainside community where my friend Douglas and T.R. live. They found a place that was one of few homes rebuilt after a devastating fire burned down a huge chunk of the land leaving once forested hills and valleys like a wasteland. One of the amazing sights was the recovered growth over the bones of the previous old forest. Houses were reduced to ash and a few rocks and bricks that bear marks of heat and devastation. Later I will post photos of some of this. The neighbors have gotten to know one another very well, those who have rebuilt. A very sweet community of people who are as different as can be and as friendly as can be. We ate at a place about 7000 feet up in the heavens, and also in a home build INSIDE the concrete remains of a barn! Innovation, care, patience, and a sense of very good will pervade. Cute little town of Julien not far away reminded me of Cape Cod MA, Even the little buildings were somewhat similar!
They treated me like the Queen of Sheba here... a real vacation. Above, we gathered at the waterfront in San Diego to look at the beautiful rolling surf of So.Cal along the promenade that stretches for miles against the beach front. And we ate at a small Greek place while the two younger men went to find Mexican food that they said was excellent. Soon after this my grandsons and I were on a plane headed to the much cooler damper Seattle.
A happy time for all.
